Searching for college scholarships

As spring term began, NCC students were greeted with the news that North Central’s tuition was increasing by 3.4 percent. This now takes the cost of school to about $45,000 for the 2015-2016 school year.

With this new cost for NCC, students may be turning to ways to help with lowering the cost. There are numerous scholarship opportunities for incoming and current students; it’s all about knowing where to find them.

One place to start a search for scholarships is NCC’s own financial aid office. The financial aid office is located on the third floor of Old Main. The office offers students with a variety of financial services to help them pay for their time at NCC.

According to the North Central College official website the financial aid office provides nearly 90 percent of freshman students with need-based aid and merit-based scholarships from all backgrounds and 100 percent of students have the chance to receive financial aid.

The financial aid office offers students different scholarships based on the year they enrolled in school and even some designed for specific majors, minors or interests. For example a student can receive a music scholarship for being a member of choir or band but does not have to be music major.

The office also offers scholarships websites, such as fastweb.com, and resources for students to look up other scholarship opportunities to help cut down the financial cost of the college.

Besides resources available to students on campus, there are also scholarship opportunities off campus. Local businesses provide NCC students with scholarship opportunities. For example, the Naperville Woman’s Club used to give a scholarship to a current NCC student for majoring in art, theater, or music.

Another area to try for scholarships is through a student’s hometown. Many NCC students are not from Naperville, but from numerous towns, cities, or states across the U.S. Sometimes communities offer their residents scholarships.

One place to try could be a student’s old high school. Usually these scholarships pertain to graduating seniors, but on occasions a student can come across a scholarship that pertains to them being alumni from a certain school, or a certain school district. Digging around for scholarships at home could lead to the potential for extra finical support.

Scholarships and other financial means for students are out there and they can come from a school’s financial office or through conducting a simple search online through scholarship sites.
