Phills talks about campus as a ‘privileged space’

Dominique L.B. Phills, an English major, shares her story on the speech she performed at the Union on Jan. 20, 2017.

“What I wanted to do was share more personalized experiences with myself that I’ve had throughout my lifetime from when I was a small child, to even now and what I predict will happen in the future,” said Phills. “I really was hoping that more students from North Central actually came, because what I was saying is something that I think needs to be heard around this campus.”

Phills said that the process of putting the speech together was hard because she originally had five different versions. A lot of parts that Phills wanted to share were cut out of the final piece due to being allowed only five minutes to present.

In regards to future projects, “I’m actually going to be doing one of my versions of my speech at another school, Dominican University,” said Phills. Reflecting back to her speech, “it was the same day as the Trump inauguration, and I thought that somebody in the crowd was going to like shoot me or something,” said Phills.

“Like, I was saying in my speech, we’re in such a bubble of a town, and I know it’s like this with a lot of college towns, but we’re in such a privileged space, and I think people get lost in the fact that there are still the unprivileged that are here, and we’re kind of forgotten a little bit,” she said, adding that she needs people to see the bigger picture.
