Run to your radio for these February WONC currents

Featuring tributes, empowering anthems and love songs, WONC’s February currents are bound to strike a nerve in the most romantic month of the year.

“One Foot” by Walk the Moon
Written one week after President Trump’s election, Walk the Moon set their sights on creating an upbeat song to remind listeners to take each day as it comes. “One Foot,” the first single from their third studio album “What If Nothing,” is a catchy track urging listeners to keep putting “one foot in front of the other.” The music video furthers this message, showing scenes of a biracial couple (“all we have is each other”) weaved into footage of the band performing in the desert.

“Daylily” by Movements
Movements frontman Patrick Miranda wrote “Daylily” for his girlfriend, highlighting her struggle with depression and mental illness. The soft, sweet track’s standout lyrics — “I think it’s time you had a pink cloud summer” — is a reference to what Miranda’s girlfriend called her ‘good days.’ In an interview with EARMILK, he said “she called the good ones her ‘pink cloud days’ and the goal was to eventually have those outnumber the bad ones.”

“We Fight” by Dashboard Confessional
After an eight-year hiatus, Dashboard Confessional returned in November with a single, album announcement and headlining tour. Their return to the emo genre with “We Fight” was inspired by their love of the music scene they grew up in. Vocalist Chris Carrabba sings “there’s still a kid somewhere that needs to hear this,” a line that has resonated with longtime fans. “Crooked Shadows,” their seventh studio album, will be released on Feb. 9.

“Handyman” by AWOLNATION
Known best for their 2011 hit “Sail,” AWOLNATION is slowing things down with their upcoming album “Here Come the Runts.” Their latest single “Handyman” tells an old-fashioned love story, with inspiration drawn from old rock’n’roll and pop music the band heard growing up. Their goal for the new album is to remain as genuine as they can, using no tuned vocals and, as frontman Aaron Bruno said to UpRoxx, “all real playing.”

“Awful Things” by Good Charlotte
Following the death of underground rapper Lil Peep, Good Charlotte released a tribute to his popular song “Awful Things.” The rock band had been in the process of setting up a collaboration with the rapper just weeks before his accidental overdose. To honor their friendship and show their respect for his work, they decided to do a live performance of this song to show at his memorial service for friends, family and fans.

“Disappear” by Tonight Alive
With featured vocals from Lynn Gunn of PVRIS and heartfelt lyrics about discovering the dark side of your personality, “Disappear” shows off the vocal talents of frontwoman Jenna McDougall. “Underworld,” Tonight Alive’s fourth album, was released in January to mixed reviews. While the album may not be perfect all-around, there are hidden gems like this melodic track.
