NCC students spill the beans on college life

EDITOR’S NOTE: During a visit with ncclinked staff, students from the newspaper club of Congress Park Elementary School covered the campus beat. Students Anne Gartner and Rachel O’Riley reported and wrote the following article.

From Congress Park Elementary school to North Central College, many people have different perspectives of their favorite and least favorite things about college life. After spending a morning interviewing multiple people at the college, we learned how some of the different college students view their experience here. Many people were open to sharing their opinion, and we had no trouble understanding what they believe.

One of the things that people like about NCC is how many opportunities they are given. Upasna Barath, ’19, said she has “opportunities to do the things that I love.” There are “so many choices” and “Sometimes there are so many things to do that I can’t decide.”

Other students like Brittany, ’18, said that they “love how much freedom you have.” Some of these freedoms include freedom to make your own decisions and freedom to choose what you’d like to learn.

Finally, two of the students we interviewed said that they liked that they get to improve their education here even with challenges. Claire Brady, ’20, said that she likes “getting to further my education” at NCC. Another person, Abby Schwarz, ’20, said that she likes “challenging herself” at NCC to further her education.

College is full of ups and downs, there is no one college experience and every students’ triumphs and challenges differ. Speaking with students across campus, we found out just what makes college great or not-so-great for each student.

Andrew Bergstrand, ’19, says that the hardest part of college is paying attention to small details and taking note of everything.

McLean Holmes, ’18, mentioned that group projects can be a challenge, and that communication is an important part of keeping group work going.

Abby Schwarz, ’20, enjoys challenging herself but can be frustrated by North Central’s fast-paced terms.

Upasna Barath, ’19, finds homework and spending time with friends a joy and finds many opportunities are available to her, but sometimes the many choices can be overwhelming.

Brittany Dzingeleski, ’18, says college offers much more freedom to pursue what you like, however, the guidance one receives in high school is not as present in college and it can be difficult navigating new challenges.

Claire Brady, ’20, is happy to be able to continue her education and learn. She finds the heavy workload and time spent studying to be difficult.

Julia Marteja, ’18, praised the flexibility offered by choosing your own schedule but does not enjoy homework and projects.
