SGA discusses campus parking, new initiatives

0

The Student Governing Association started its first open meeting of the year with new board members and new campus initiatives.

  • A new parking lot will be built on campus behind Res/Rec over the current tennis courts. One-hundred new parking spots will be built here. The lot will be limited to only faculty and staff parking. Parking by Merner Fieldhouse will be designated commuter student parking. The lot is being built to help reduce overcrowding with the wave of students coming to NCC as part of the new occupational therapy master’s program. Tennis matches will now take place at Nike Park.
  • The new meal plans do not allow students to swipe for other people unless they use a guest pass. The change in meal plan rules is due to Chartwells losing money last year from swipes. Essentially, Chartwells does not want two people to be sharing one meal plan. Unlimited plans also have guest passes to prevent students with those plans from swiping in a multitude of people into different dining options on campus.
  • The Get Involved Fair will be held on campus on Sept. 5.
  • SGA is looking into building a new seating area between Res/Rec and Merner Fieldhouse, similar to the patio that was built outside New Hall. This would accommodate the large number of students who live in Res/Rec and often have to walk far to sit somewhere nice outside.
  • SGA will be working with Green Scene to promote the No Idling Policy on campus, which asks all students, staff and faculty to not leave their cars idling while on campus for environmental reasons.
  • Another project that SGA hopes to work on this year is putting in a sand volleyball court on campus. Further discussion will happen to determine the best place on campus to place it.
  • Weekly SGA meetings may relocate to upper WAC after renovation to be more centrally located on campus.

SGA meets every Tuesday in Room 212 in the School of Business and Entrepreneurship at 12:45 p.m. All students are welcome to attend the meetings and share any ideas they have to enhance student life on campus. For more information, visit their webpage here.
