At around 6 p.m. (CST) the 2020 NFL Draft had finally closed, but it did not take long for North Central College quarterback, Broc Rutter, ’20, to land on an NFL roster. According to J.J. Stankevitz of NBC Sports Chicago, Broc Rutter has signed as an undrafted free agent deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

Rutter has come a long way to get to the NFL. The Naperville product attended Neuqua Valley High School then committed to Indiana State. After spending a year in a Division I program, Rutter decided to come home and transfer to North Central.

Rutter has gone on to shatter every program passing record and would become the Division III all-time leader in passing yardage. Rutter led the Cardinals to their first NCAA Division III national championship and earned the Gagliardi Trophy.

“I’m so excited and super grateful for the opportunity. It’s been dream of mine since I was three years old. I can’t wait to get to work,” said Rutter.

After finishing on top at the collegiate level, Rutter signed with the Priority Sports agency. Rutter was also invited to take part in the Hula Bowl in Hawaii. Rutter went to throw a touchdown pass in Aloha Stadium.

Before the COVID-19 outbreak, Rutter had the opportunity to work out in front of NFL scouts during the Northern Illinois University Pro Day on March 4, and the Northwestern Pro Day on March 10. Rutter spent months in Colorado at the QB Collective working with former NFL quarterback Sage Rosenfels and NFL prospects Anthony Gordon from Washington State and Brian Lewerke out of Michigan State.

Rutter will be heading to a team that just lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV, 31-20. The 49ers have not signed any other quarterbacks after Rutter, but they still have a crowded quarterback room that includes Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard. Rutter will be competing with all three of them in training camp and in preseason games to make the final 53-man roster.
