With all the confusion and closings going on due to the current pandemic, it can be difficult to remember that not everything has been put on hold. The elections for SGA (Student Governing Association) have gone as scheduled, only this time online. Students recently voted in new members for the SGA Executive Board for the 2020-2021 year.
The new president of the board is Elizabeth Eckerty, ’21. She has been working in student governing ever since her high school years. When she started attending SGA meetings at NCC, she quickly learned that college was a huge step up. As the new president, she is anticipating a lot of planning and meetings.
“I am very ambitious in life and with my duties, so I am always thinking of innovative ways to improve campus,” said Eckerty.
Right now, her goals are to see if she can implement a to-go service at Kaufman. Eckerty would also like to find ways for NCC to work more closely with the city of Naperville.
Nayeli Montes, ’22, is the new secretary for SGA. She attempted to join SGA in the past but never could join due to her work schedule. However, she joined other clubs in executive positions, allowing her to gain experience for this job. This job will require her to ensure functional communication between all board members as well as communication between the college and the students.
The elected academic life officer is Michael Longworth, ’21. He has held this position for two years now. His responsibility is to bring student concerns to the attention of the Academic Programs and Policies Committee (APPC).
He votes on curriculum changes and reports students’ academic concerns to the committee. Longworth is also responsible for attending the NCC Board of Trustees meetings to provide student perspectives of academic life.
Kimmy Doung, ’21, is the student life officer. She has worked in student governing positions since high school, gradually evolving all the while.
“It is a goal of mine to make sure that students’ experiences here at North Central College, whether they may be a commuter or resident, are memorable, meaningful and life-changing,” said Duong.
As someone who now speaks for the student body to the administration, she intends to make good on her goal.
For any questions, comments or concerns regarding campus life, students are encouraged to attend weekly SGA meetings during the school year or reach out to executive board members.
