NCC sees new spike in COVID-19 cases

NCC has recently seen a spike in COVID-19 cases. From Sept. 24-30, NCC has had nine new positive cases. These updates have been recorded on the school’s official test results website.

NCC has been fortunate that the total cases have been low. Required face coverings, social distancing, online learning and other new procedures have helped keep this number down. The school has also brought in new contact tracers as a part of new COVID-19 procedures.

Peter Barger

Peter Barger is the assistant provost and director of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning. He is also a co-chair of NCC’s COVID-19 Institutional Response Team. Barger gave some insight regarding the increase in campus cases. He said while the school did see a small spike at the end of Sept., the seven-day rolling average of positive tests has been low.

“Since the beginning of August, that average has been at most one positive test per day, with the positivity rate for a single day of testing at or below 1.5%, which is far below the positivity rate in DuPage County, Region 8 and the state of Illinois more broadly,” said Barger.

Barger also said how the school has implemented tons of new health and safety measures dating back to the summer. The school has focused on prioritizing the health and wellness of all people within the campus community.

Barger urges students to not get complacent.

“We have our fall break and Halloween coming up this month, and we recognize that it can be tempting to let your guard down. Don’t. We’ve gotten this far and we need to remain committed to the #TogetherNC pledge to care for our own health and the health of others,” said Barger.
