Best ways to survive college snow day

1

The warmth of summer 2020 resulted in one of the worst winters the nation has had in some time. NCC has been struck hard with winter weather but there are ways to stay safe and content during a snow day or two.

Transportation

If stepping outside into the cold is a necessity, bundle up. Layer clothing to adjust to the body as needed. Hats, gloves, scarves and jackets protect from colds and touches of flu, which is especially important during a pandemic.

When driving or walking, give space between you and the person or vehicle in front of you. You never know where there is black ice or there is too much slush that could cause an accident. Be cautious and be willing to give a helping hand when needed.

“When your vehicle sits for a few days without being started in cold conditions, your car battery has a less likely chance of starting,” according to Campus Safety in an email sent out to residents. “We encourage students to routinely start their vehicles to ensure their battery will work when you need to drive.”

Students staying occupied

“As a college student, I spend the day studying and finishing assignments instead of building a snowman or a snow fort like when I was a child,” said Madison Brotherton, ‘23. “Snow days can be a bummer, but I think if you have the right music and good snacks it can be so much better. There’s something relaxing about being stuck inside while it snows, and I try to embrace that.”

During a snow day, Angel Tovar, ’23, tries to “stay productive and continue to work on every aspect of myself so that I’m not only a student in the classroom but a lifelong learner who can apply the content they learn inside and outside the classroom to the real world to make it a better place.”

Personal precautions

Stay inside and warm as much as possible. The body must be able to stay at 97–99 degrees Fahrenheit to fully function. When surrounded by below-freezing temperatures, correct precautions must be taken for general human health. Due to COVID-19, there are ways to take classes remotely. Reach out to professors if certain events occur where remote learning is needed.

Give the body time to detox. Undergoing stress sometimes arises during the second half of the year. Take time for the mind, body and soul. Sit down and enjoy one of your favorite movies or TV shows, journal or even take a moment to breathe and meditate for a moment.
