Martin Luther King Jr. day events hosted at NCC

On Monday, Jan. 17, NCC’s office of multicultural affairs hosted virtual programs to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Teach-in

The programs began with a teach-in from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Each hour there were three different teach-in session options. Each session spoke on a different topic that related to Dr. King’s hope for a world filled with peace and justice. The sessions focused on Dr. King’s ideas, but each session covered ideas in different ways. They covered disability rights and the relationship between the civil rights movement and religion. One session focused on Dr. King’s ideas about hate, love and civil rights.

“(Dr. King) had a love for humanity and for people. He was a humanitarian, he cared about equal rights, civil rights,” said Professor Danielle Langford of NCC’s Business and Entrepreneurship Department.

Luncheon

After the teach-in sessions, a virtual luncheon was hosted on the NCC Youtube channel. This luncheon, a COVID-friendly substitute for the tradition of the prayer breakfast held in the past, was hosted by Dr. Geneace Williams. Williams, the diversity, equity and inclusion manager for the city of Naperville, spoke on the topic of “We have tarried here long enough”. The video of Williams’ luncheon presentation is available to watch on Youtube.

Community service

The day’s events came to a close with encouragement to volunteer in the community. NCC sent out a link to their community service portal and encouraged people to volunteer in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
