NCC Humor Magazine: The Kindling

0

The Kindling is NCC’s student-organized humor magazine which has run each year as a practicum course available for anyone to take. This year, the Kindling is not available as a class due to the restructuring. It seemed like no magazine would be printed this year, but thankfully students stepped forward to conduct the Kindling as a club simply out of enjoyment of the program.

The current issue

While it is not for credit this year, the members are still hard at work with their issue, which is due to come out before summer break. Due to the limited staff, scope and support, the issue will be smaller than other years. However, what is most important is that this NCC tradition continues. The staff this year is working hard to see the issue materialize in time.

“I see a whole lot of potential for creativity in it and I want to spread that around. This is a stress-free way of doing while having some fun,” said President of the Kindling Jack Lasater, ’22.

The issue this year is a mock-theme with interactive coloring booklets for children commonly found at restaurants. It contains a collection of NCC-themed activities, things to color, jokes and fake stories to poke fun at the campus. When the magazine releases later this semester, students can pick up copies from across the campus’ media baskets.

“I’m looking forward to how much people interact with the activities, and people sharing the cover online,” said Lasater.

The future

The Kindling will be returning as a practicum course next semester and is planned to be stronger than ever. This is good news for students looking to gain experience in graphic design, writing and publishing. Students who simply want to have fun, express themselves artistically or try something new are welcome as well.

Anyone interested in participating next year is welcome to ask questions to the club, or its faculty advisor, Dr. Lisa Long. A wide variety of skills go into producing the magazine, and the process contains useful experience for almost any major.
