Interim president steps in after Troy Hammond resigns

In early May, the NCC community received news that President Troy Hammond had decided to resign. Hammond had been with the college since 2013. He oversaw the expansion of the college’s STEM programs and oversaw tremendous growth in the college’s research program. Dr. Donna M. Carroll will join NCC for the 2022-23 academic year as interim President.

Hammond’s resignation came months after the Board of Trustees notified faculty and staff that there is an active internal review of the college. When asked for comment, the board declined to elaborate on the investigation.

Carroll at NCC

On July 27, Dr. Donna M. Carroll was announced as NCC’s interim president. She began her tenure on Aug. 1. Carroll had previously been president at Dominican University 27 years. She had also served various administrative positions at other schools, including Fordham University and University of Cincinnati.

In an email sent to the NCC community, the Board of Trustees said they fully empowered Carroll to lead the college during her tenure. They also said they would continue with their transition plan.

“As we look to the future, we know that our next permanent president will bring renewed ideas and vision for how we can achieve even greater success in the years to come,” said Jim McDermet, ’92 who is the chair of the Board of Trustees.

Student reaction

Comments from students online are praising the change in the college’s leadership.

Students are also excited to see what the change of leadership will mean for the future.

“With him [Hammond] leaving, I hope that the college can move forward, and begin to listen to what the students want,” said Josh Rossi, ’22.
