On Feb. 26, NCC hosted the 2023 Chicago Japan Bowl. This high-school-level academic competition is sponsored by the Japan America Society of Chicago. High school students studying Japanese language and culture put their skills and knowledge to the test.

According to the National Japan Bowl website, students go “beyond language. [We] ask about their knowledge of Japanese culture, society, daily life, history, geography and current events.”

Winners of the regional competitions head to the national competition in April. After this year’s regional Japan Bowl contest, the society held a Japanese taiko show.  This was the first return of the event from a break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students and teachers alike were happy to see its return.

The national competition will be held April 13-14. A live stream will be hosted on their website.
