‘Scott Pilgrim’ vs Netflix

0

Nov. 17, the most recent adaptation of “Scott Pilgrim” dropped onto Netflix.  This time around, instead of another movie or video game, it released as an anime.

Prelude

The IP of Scott Pilgrim has been around since 2004 with the original release of “Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life.” Created by Bryan Lee O’Malley, five additional books were released through 2010. A movie and a game release in 2010 followed this initial release. Both the books and movie garnered a large following. Fans called for another movie or novel throughout the years. March 30, 2023, felt like an early Christmas as Netflix announced a “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” anime. Alongside the announcement came the reveal of the movie cast that would voice their roles.

The show

Animated by Science SARU, “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is an eight-episode anime—a quick binge for someone who wants something new to watch. The show is a new adaptation, deviating from the original story by the end of episode one.

At first, it seems as though it will just be a simple adaptation of the original story, but it subverts viewers’ expectations. Instead of the story focusing mainly on the character of Scott, the main focus rests on the love interest, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and her search for Scott. Furthermore, this allows for O’Malley to flesh out characters who didn’t get the chance in other mediums. Alongside the new story, the animation medium also allows new set pieces, fight sequences and character interactions to be as far out and fleshed out as they need to be without the limitations of live action.

Character select

As mentioned, the focus shifting from Scott to Ramona allowed for necessary changes from the source material. One immediate change was in Ramona’s character. Many fans complain about how cold or mean-spirited the character can be, but the show turns that around. Ramona receives the most development she has ever gotten within the IP. She gets the chance to grow from her past and the consequences of it, which never happened in the books or movie.

Whether it be within an episode or throughout the entire series, each character gets a chance to shine. Even the Seven Evil Exes who existed for Scott and Ramona, get screen time. Highlights include Lucas Lee (Chris Evans) and Todd Ingram (Brandon Routh). Both of whom are also on set for a movie written by Young Neil (Johnny Simmons).

One character who gets a more in-depth arc is the character of Knives Chau (Ellen Wong). Originally, the character revolved around Scott and her importance through him. In the anime, she grows as an individual. She even becomes closer to the characters Stephen (Mark Webber) and Kim Pine (Alison Pill).

Dream or nightmare

Overall, “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is an adaptation that expands in ways fans won’t expect. Fleshing out side characters and villains in new manners brings out stronger story interactions throughout. On top of that, a returning voice cast brings extreme dynamism and familiar characters. From Brie Larson to Chris Evans to Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the cast provides new insight into characters now over twenty years old. With many fans and audiences providing critical acclaim for the eight-episode series, it is safe to say Scott Pilgrim has taken off.
