The Cardinals’ men’s soccer team kicked off College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament play with a rematch against Wheaton College that happened on Nov. 4.

The Thunder defeated North Central 2-0 earlier this season. Things were different this time around, as the Cardinals emerged victorious in a 5-4 penalty kick shootout.

The match was scoreless throughout the first 90 minutes of regulation, and then again through two overtime periods. North Central goalkeeper Justin De Boer recorded five saves and proved solid during two overtime periods and a penalty kick shootout. Matt Koth sealed the deal with his shot as the Cardinals claimed a 5-4 victory.

With this victory, the Cardinals advanced to the CCIW Tournament Championship in Kenosha, Wisconsin on the 7th to take on the Carthage College Red Men.

If you can recall, a little over a month ago, the Red Men topped the Cardinals 1-0. The outcome here was similar this time around as well, as Carthage claims the CCIW title and advances to the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament.

The Cardinals got on the board in the 61st minute with a goal from Ryan O’Deen off of an assist by Joey Faleni. Carthage put the nail in the coffin with the final goal in the 80th minute. The Cardinals finished 5-14-1 this season after an impressive playoff run.
