North Central College freshman, Debra Jensen, was the recipient of the Buildium’s Build U. Scholarship after submitting an essay on shared ethics and motivations in the workplace. Jensen, from Bourbonnais, IL, is a double major in interactive media studies and computer science.
Jensen’s essay was prompted by a visit to Fastweb.com, a popular website that connects college students with scholarship opportunities from a variety of sources. This essay prompt, which was offered by Buildium Property Management, sought to find how shared beliefs and work ethics between employers and employees creates a more productive work environment.
“I was very surprised,” said Jensen, as she reflected on being told that she won the $2,000 scholarship award for her essay. “It’s one of those things that you never really hear about anybody actually winning, so it was a huge surprise. I’m really thankful.”
Jensen is the second recipient of the scholarship, making her among the elite few to win this prestigious prize. A winner is chosen every month, with Jensen being the April scholarship winner.
“I think both for employers and for people seeking jobs, you really need to find a company that fits your personal ethics and goals,” expressed Jensen. “You want to have a company that you’re going to be excited to work for, and if that company’s mission statement matches what you want to get out of it, then it’s going to be a much better and more productive fit.”
Jensen is thankful to all that helped her with this great opportunity and scholarship.
“I’m just really thankful to both the company that offered the scholarship, Buildium, and I’m also very thankful to Professor Schulman, who showed me the group process class that got me onto the topic and inspired most of my essay,” said Jensen.
