NCC to celebrate outstanding environmental award on Earth Day

Spring is here, which means that Earth Day is right around the corner. On Wednesday, April 22, 2015 from starting at 11:30 am, North Central College will be having their annual Earth Day celebration in Jefferson Plaza.

This year’s spotlight event is the presentation of NCC with the Gold Level award of the Illinois Campus Sustainability Compact. NCC has reached the bronze level in the past, and has now met its goal of reaching Gold level. It is only fitting that NCC receive this honor on Earth Day.

Earth Day started by Senator Gaylord Nelson as an educational seminar to provide a forum to discuss environmental issues on April 22, 1970. The event became international in 1990. Now schools, towns, and organizations across the United States and the globe hold Earth Day celebrations on this day every year.

NCC is proud to continue a strong Earth Day tradition this year with the reception of this award. Previous celebrations featured NCC planting a native plant garden outside Oesterle Library through a student’s National Wildlife Federation Grant in 2014, and NCC receiving an Earth Flag from the Environmental organization SCARCE. in 2013.

There will also be information displayed regarding North Central’s sustainability efforts over the past year and how they are beginning to pay off. There will also be games and opportunities to win raffle prizes donated by the Naperville community, including prizes from Noodles and Company, the Naperville Running Company, Trader Joe’s and others. Free snacks and refreshments will be served.

The event is open to North Central College and the surrounding community. Come out and celebrate spring with NCC’s Earth Day celebration! In the event of rain, the celebration will be moved to the Jefferson Lounge.
