Alan Rickman, a beloved British actor, passed away this past Wednesday. Sources say he lost the fight with cancer during the night with his family by his side. Rickman is best known for his role as Professor Severus Snape from the Harry Potter films.
Rickman has made us laugh and cry over the years with the plethora of characters he embodied. Although he would be typically cast as the villain, due to his smooth sneaky voice and creepy demeanor, viewers had a sense that there would be something deeper within his characters. From comedies such as “Galaxy Quest,” to musicals such as “Sweeny Todd,” even to dramas like “Die Hard,” and romantics like “Love Actually,” it is clear the world has lost a wonderful performer.
Rickman was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), and performed in both classical and modern theatrical productions. His breakout role was as the scheming Vicomte de Valmont in a 1985 RSC production of “Les Liaisons Dangereuses.”
While Rickman may be gone, his voice may yet visit us one more time as The Blue Caterpillar in “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” which will be released later this year.
As we mourn the loss of a theatrical and film great, he does leave us with hundreds of wonderful quotes, including this one: “When I am 80 years old and sitting in my rocking-chair, I’ll be reading Harry Potter and my family will say to me, ‘After all this time?’ And I will say, ‘Always.’”
