Candidates’ taxes, health … you know the rest

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton recently told the press that her late reveal of her pneumonia diagnosis was because she “didn’t think it was going to be a big deal,” according to USA Today. Is it not a big deal? Are presidential candidate tax returns not a big deal either? NCC students give their thoughts.

Freshman Kris Remiasz:

How important is a candidate’s health?

“I think that’s not as major but it is part of it, because if you’re running for office, you need to be able to attend meetings and whatnot.”

Should a candidate be upfront about their health, or hide it?

“Open and honest. If people find out, they’re going to question why they (candidate) didn’t tell them from the start.”

What’s your opinion on candidates revealing their financial records?

“You want to know what they’re doing and whether they’re doing something illegal or not.”

What is a major aspect of a candidate that determines your decision making?

“Respecting everyone.”

How important is a candidate’s health?

“Not too important to me. I don’t think the health matters that much; it’s more important about what they’re planning to do. We had a president who was in a wheelchair, so health doesn’t really make a difference on whether they’ll be a good leader or not.”

Should a candidate be upfront about their health, or hide it?

“I think that they should be upfront about it. If they want us to trust them, we should know what’s going on, especially with such an important position.”

What’s your opinion on candidates revealing their financial records?

“I think it’s just nice that we have the ability to know what’s going on behind the scenes. So in that case, it’s an important tradition to have. I think more people pay attention to it and give it more meaning than they probably should; what you do with your personal finances is your own problem — we don’t all need to know about it.”

What is a major aspect of a candidate that determines your decision making?

“For me, economic policy is my first major thing. That and, because I’m an accounting major, the tax reform.”

How important is a candidate’s health?

“I would think it’s an important factor, but at the same time, we’ve had presidents with health problems before; we had a president who was in a wheelchair and he still did amazing things for our country. So at the same time I would say it’s not that important, depending on how it will affect their mental state or their ability to perform duties as the president.”

Should a candidate be upfront about their health, or hide it?

“It should be open to the public; the public should be aware if they are dealing with health issues. Especially with a president we should know if they have a long term condition.”

What’s your opinion on candidates revealing their financial records?

“This person is going to represent our country, we should have full information of their background and what they’ve been involved with.”

What is a major aspect of a candidate that determines your decision making?

“How candidates appear and view different issues.”
