Going behind the curtain at WONC

EDITOR’S NOTE: During a visit with ncclinked staff, students from the newspaper club of Congress Park Elementary School covered the campus beat. Students Nathan Scalzo, Oscar Rivera and  Zoe Knott reported and wrote the following article.

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of a radio station?

We went behind the scenes of North Central College’s very own radio station WONC and we talked with DJ hosts Chris Duffy and Peter Medlin.

They mostly play rock and roll and they go on air three times an hour.

When the orange light flashes it means someone is on the phone calling to request a song to be played on the radio. While Duffy was hosting, he got a request to play the song “Land of Hopes and Dreams” by Bruce Springsteen. Unfortunately, the song wasn’t available to be played, so Duffy wrote it down on a clipboard so the song could be added another time.

Dj host Medlin said, “My favorite song to play on the radio is Dog Problems by Format.”

Duffy and Medlin both gave reasons regarding what they talk about on air. Duffy likes to talk about movies and Medlin likes to tell stories while on air. We received an exclusive insight into a possible new show that will feature British artists from a specific era.

At the end of our tour we met the WONC General Manager John Madorno who has been here for 38 years and this is his last year at NCC because he is retiring.
