SGA week 6: voting, class gifts, homecoming

The Student Governing Association held their weekly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 18 and covered a wide range of topics. President Ivan Bohorquez presided over the affair.

  • The meeting started by passing around overviews of their liaisons with the committee over the past few weeks.
  • They discussed an idea to put up an arch over Chicago near either Kaufman or Wentz Concert Hall. Plans are not final, but they want some sort of marker for North Central’s campus.
  • SGA discussed the importance of Turbovote and registration, yet people did not use the NCC link.
  • Around 100 people used the link, while according to the Center for Student Impact, at least 300 people registered without the link.
  • Green Scene is having a “get out the vote” contest. Students must post their absentee form or “I voted” sticker on Twitter @NCC_greenscene or e-mail it at sscreadon@noctrl.edu. Participants will be entered for a chance to win a gift card.
  • It was noted that the college has been moving away from “class gifts” and into more generalized donations.
  • Curriculum switches for D-term trips and the impact on other classes were discussed.
  • SGA may paint windows and recruit others to help for community service.
  • SGA might host a table at Homecoming.
  • They would like to increase student attendance at weekly meetings, possibly by offering free food.
  • Future events potentially include tie-dye or a bonfire.
  • President Troy Hammond will be hosting dinner at his house on Oct. 30. RSVP by Tuesday, Oct. 23 to Bohorquez. There will be a taco bar.

Students are encouraged to attend SGA meetings to share their opinions. Meetings are held every Thursday at noon in room 210 in the School of Business and Entrepreneurship.
