MOVIE REVIEW: “Scream VI” slashing into theaters

Fans of the slasher horror genre will love the newest addition to the “Scream” franchise! “Scream VI” hits theaters March 10, 2023 in the United States. The film continues the franchise’s theme of being a commentary on the traditional slasher movie. Audiences won’t know who to trust, and that’s exactly what the movie wants.

What’s your favorite scary movie?

“Scream VI” follows four survivors of the Ghostface murders that happened a year prior in Woodsboro. The group tries to get a fresh start in New York City, but of course things aren’t that easy. They soon find themselves fighting for their lives when a new killer goes on a bloody tear to try and end them and anyone who may stand in its way.

First-time viewers of the franchise may be concerned about beginning with the sixth movie in the series. The film, however, does a good job of vaguely giving the audience a light recap with just enough information that they can go in blind and still enjoy. That being said, there may be some references that just won’t land for these viewers.

Big shoes to fill

The film follows the tradition of being very meta, due to the “Scream” franchise itself being a love letter to the genre. The characters constantly acknowledge that they live in a stereotypical slasher film. Despite this, they all play into their tropes without being overly obnoxious. It honors the Wes Craven legacy while still being unique.

This is easily one of the most tension-filled films in the franchise since the original cult classic. The action sequences are creative, yet not unbelievable. There is also a lot more bloodshed than the others in the series. Shifting from a place like Woodsboro, a fictional small California town, to New York City feeds the plot line. With so many people around, it leaves audience members on the edge of their seats trying to identify the new killer.

A killer reputation

The cast consists of familiar faces, such as Melissa Barrera, Courteney Cox and Hayden Panettiere—all returning characters. It also features Jenna Ortega, who is not only a returning character, but is highly sought after due to her popularity as Wednesday Addams in the Netflix series “Wednesday”.

Rotten Tomatoes gives this movie a 77%, Metacritic has it at 61% and IMDb gives is a fair 7.3/10. According to Rotten Tomatoes, fans are giving “Scream VI” a score of 92%. Overall, this movie was enjoyable and a good addition to the “Scream” franchise. For fans of the genre, it’s a must see.
