The Grammy Awards announce nominees

The Recording Academy revealed nominations for the 2024 Grammy Awards on Nov. 10, with R&B singer SZA, Victoria Monet and Phoebe Bridgers leading with the most nominations. 

Most nominated

SZA scored the most nominations overall with nine, including nods for record of the year for “Kill Bill,” album of the year for “SOS,” and song of the year for “Kill Bill.” SZA is also up for best pop duo/group performance for “Ghost In The Machine” featuring Phoebe Bridgers, best R&B performance and song for “Kill Bill” and best traditional R&B performance for “Love Language.” Additionally, “SOS” is nominated for best progressive R&B album and Low” is nominated for best melodic rap performance.

Bridgers and Monet followed closely behind with seven nominations each. Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Brandy Clark, Jon Batiste and Jack Antonoff each earned six nominations. 

Competing against SZA’s “Kill Bill” for record and song of the year are tracks by boygenius, Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey, Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift.

Album of the year

Album of the year nominees include Taylor Swift. She was nominated for her album “Midnights” that was released in October 2022. The album marked her return to pop for the singer-songwriter after her previous two indie folk albums and album re-recordings. Swift has previously won this award three times. First, for her country album “Fearless,” pop album “1989” and indie folk album “folklore.” If she wins this award for the fourth time, it would make her the first artist to ever do so. She is currently on her Eras stadium tour in Latin America. 

Other album of the year nominees include Jon Batiste forWorld Music Radio. Batiste has previously won album of the year for his album “We Are.” The other nominees in the category include: boygenius for “The Record,” Miley Cyrus for “Endless Summer Vacation,” Lana Del Rey for “Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd,” Janelle Monae for “The Age of Pleasure” and Olivia Rodrigo for “GUTS.”

The academy has nominated Cyrus and Rodrigo in the category before, but they have not taken the award home yet. Although Rodrigo has only released two albums since her debut, this is her second nomination in the category.

Other categories

Additionally, Rodrigo has also received a nomination for best rock song with her track “ballad of a homeschooled girl” off of “GUTS.” Rodrigo has previously won best pop vocal album, best pop solo performance and best new artist.

Daniel Nigro received a nomination for producer of the year. He has worked with artists such as Olivia Rodrigo and Conan Gray. Jack Antonoff also received a nomination for producer of the year. “Midnights, which he produced with Swift, is nominated for album of the year. Antonoff has also previously produced Swift’s “1989,” which won album of the year.

The last major category is best new artist.

The Grammy Awards describes this category as “an artist whose eligibility-year release(s) achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and notably impacted the musical landscape.”

Nominees include Gracie Abrams, Fred again.., Ice Spice, Jelly Roll, Coco Jones, Noah Kahan, Victoria Monét and The War And Treaty. 

Forbes has predicted that Ice Spice will take the award home. She rose in fame quickly and has since then released several hit songs. She has also had major collaborations with artists such as Taylor Swift.

The 66th Grammy Awards will take place on Feb. 4, 2024, at the Crypto.com Arena in LA.
